Grade school needs 'experts' for after-school academy

Thursday, June 6, 2019

Warrenton Grade School wants you.

If you’ve got an interest, hobby, skill or experience that’s appropriate for sharing with students consider volunteering for the Warrenton After School Academy.

Applications are available on the district’s website and at the Warrenton Grade School office.

The academy is run by volunteers as an enrichment program targeting students in grades 5-8.

Students select from a schedule of eight-week enrichment classes designed by community members, so they may vary from session to session. Potential offerings include art, book clubs, music, STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), and sports.

“Warrenton Grade School believes that our students are capable of being competitive with their peers across the state,” Vice Principal Sean O’Malley said. “We believe that economic disadvantages and other challenges do not mean that our students can’t achieve great things.”

Nonetheless, the district struggles with a lack of opportunity that comes with a rural lifestyle, he said.

Volunteers must commit to a minimum of one class meeting per week for eight weeks and submit to an interview and background check.
