Warrenton has hired a new building official to replace Robert Johnston, who retires at the end of the year.

Van Wilfinger, who is regional manager for Interwest Consulting Group, comes to the city from Palmdale, Calif.

“Van has over 20 years’ experience in the field and, along with his customer service philosophy, I believe he will be a great addition to the team we are building here at the city,” City Manager Linda Engbretson said. “He has family here and is excited to be in Warrenton.”

Wilfinger also has worked as a building official for the cities of Wildomar and Laguna Niguel in California and served in the U.S. Coast Guard for 4 ½ years.

He will join the city in early November.

Wilfinger was the top candidate chosen by an interview panel that included local builder Charles Bergerson, City Commissioner Mark Baldwin, who also is a contractor, and city staff members.

Wilfinger is the second new hire in what currently is a four-person department.

Scott Hess was hired last month as the new community development director, replacing Kevin Cronin. He begins later this month.
