County, cities approve FEMA flood maps

Friday, June 1, 2018

Clatsop County, Warrenton and most other area cities have approved a new flood insurance rate map, study and development rules issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Each of the governmental bodies held public hearings on the rules.

FEMA is set to put the Flood Insurance Rate Map and Flood Insurance Study into effect June 20, and the county and cities must adopt them to remain eligible for the National Flood Insurance Program.

In addition, the county and cities also must adopt new rules for development within designated Special Flood Hazard Areas, which will require permits for a list of land-use activities that currently are exempt.

Had the county or the cities chosen not to adopt the FEMA rules, property owners would be ineligible to obtain or renew flood insurance coverage through the program.
