Cindy Kirby, director of transportation for the Warrenton-Hammond School District, was named state Transportation Supervisor of the Year.

The award from the Oregon Pupil Transportation Association was announced June 29 during its annual conference in Bend.

Bus drivers under Kirby’s supervision asked the district to nominate her for the honor, Superintendent Tom Rogozinski said.

“This speaks volumes about the respect and appreciation they and our entire district staff have for her leadership,” he said. “There is no one more deserving of this award. Cindy's work is always anchored in doing what is best for our students. She is a tenacious problem-solver who regularly goes above and beyond to serve our families.”

Kirby’s staff of bus drivers insisted she ride in the Fourth of July Parade as a way to honor her for all of her hard work.

She led the team in delivering lunches to children throughout the community during the summer and throughout the pandemic closures. She also came up with an idea to recycle outdated football jerseys and helmets by using them for a community fundraiser, proceeds to benefit Warrenton High School sports programs.

“We think Cindy deserves this award because she does a tremendous job,” the district’s transportation team wrote in her nomination application. “This place would fall apart without her. Because we are a small district and have a small budget, Cindy has to wear many hats. She is a leader, organizer, part mechanic, driver, mentor, secretary, friend.”

Kirby always has a positive attitude, her drivers say. And this year there have been driver shortages, bus breakdowns, highway closures and COVID-19.

“She has done so much,” bus driver Leanna Glover said. “This (the award) is a big deal and would raise the spirits of the community and increase awareness of the lunch program.”
