Seaside offering beach wheelchairs

Friday, August 3, 2018

The Sunset Empire Park & Recreation District has made two free beach-accessible wheelchairs available for the public.

The wheelchairs create new opportunities for those with mobility issues. Outfitted with large, wide tires, the wheelchairs make it easy for mobility-impaired people to go on the sand.

Manzanita was the first community on the Oregon Coast to provide beach wheelchairs and Cannon Beach followed last year.

Randy Anderson, a local painter and advocate for disabled individuals, was one of the driving forces behind the program. Anderson has lived in Seaside since 1990. Denise and Patrick Duhachek, owners of Wheel Fun Rentals, jumped on the bandwagon.

Wheel Fun Rentals donated two beach wheelchairs from their inventory in the hopes the parks district can provide year-round access.

Reservations are encouraged, but not required, by calling the Bob Chisholm Community Center at 503-738-7393.
