Friday, January 4, 2019

Clatsop Community College’s Small Business Development Center offers a variety of classes for those thinking about starting a new business and those who need to brush up on some skills.

To register for any of the workshops, go to bizcenter.org/centers/clatsop-sbdc/our-classes. Or call 503-338-2402.

** Ready, Set, Start Your Business

This is for those who have a great idea but don’t know how to get started. The class covers the basics and will help attendees decide if they’re ready to be in business. It will explain what it takes to run one, and if there’s a customer base to support it.

Included are funding options, how much money is needed to start and legal issues. Those who decide to take the next step can schedule a private appointment with a business adviser.

Registration is $20. Classes are from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Jan. 9 or March 6 in Room 219 of Columbia Hall on the Astoria campus, and 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Feb. 6 at the South County campus.

** Introduction to QuickBooks

This is a very basic introduction to QuickBooks, the standard business financial software. The instructor will walk the class through each of the steps to manage money for a simple, imaginary company. Each participant will have a computer for hands-on learning. Inventory and payroll won’t be covered in the introductory workshop.

Classes are $20 and meet from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Feb. 5 at the South County campus or from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 5 in room 105 of Towler Hall in Astoria.

** QuickBooks Level 2

Students will build on the concepts demonstrated in the introduction class and will work with a sample retail business to set up inventory items, tie the items to preferred vendors, create purchase orders, receive inventory, sell inventory, count inventory, write off “shrinkage” (loss or theft), and produce reports to show the current status of Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable.

Cost is $20. Classes are 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Feb. 19 at the South County campus or from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 19 in room 105 of Towler Hall in Astoria.

** Excel Level 1

Excel is a powerful electronic spreadsheet widely used in business. In this introductory class, current business owners and those seeking to start a business will learn how to navigate within workbooks and worksheets, organize data into rows and columns, format text and cells, write simple formulas, and create charts.

Students should bring their own laptop or use the classroom computers (with Excel 2010). Students will receive sample spreadsheets to use in class and practice with at home.

Cost is $20. Classes are 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. March 5 at the South County campus or 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. March 5 in room 105 of Towler Hall in Astoria.

** Excel Level 2

Students with a basic knowledge of Excel will continue to learn skills that are helpful in a work situation: using formulas and functions and summarizing data in a pivot table.

Cost is $20. Classes are 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. March 19 in South County or 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. March 19 in Towler Hall in Astoria.
